Baihedong Fm
Type Locality and Naming
The Baihedong Formation was established by the No.735 Geological Team of the Guangdong Bureau of Geology in 1973. Its type section is down the bore-hole No.ZKIII-1 at Baihedong of Guangzhou City.
Lithology and Thickness
The Baihedong Formation comprises a set of yellow brown, purple red and dark gray clastic rocks, which is roughly divided into three parts. Lower part is represented by yellow brown conglomerate, sandy conglomerate, sandstone and siltstone -- the Basal part is differentiated from the underlying Devonian strata by the appearance of yellow brown conglomerate and sandy conglomerate. Middle part is gray green sandy mudstone. Upper part is dark gray marl and siltstone, and is commonly intercalated with thin gypsum beds. The Baihedong Formation is measuring 660 m in thickness. It does not vary greatly in lithology and ranges from 660 to 960 m in thickness.
Relationships and Distribution
Lower contact
The Baihedong Formation unconformably overlies pre-Cretaceous (Devonian) strata. Regionally, the next older unit is the Baizushan Fm.
Upper contact
The top part is unconformably bounded by the macroclastic rocks at the base of the Sanshui Fm
